RIDGE

Ridge will always be the home I associate with my grandparents, Fred & Ethel Mildon. I thought there would be interest in showing an aerial photograph of the property (courtesy of Google Earth)
"Ridge", Cheriton Fitzpaine, Crediton, Devon

The east wing appears to have had one or even two extensions judging by the colour of the roof tiles. The fruit and vegetable plots and the orchard have all gone.
There was a cement path all around the house and the section outside the coal shed made a funny noise as you ran over it. I left my sister hanging upside down in an apple tree in the orchard whilst I went for help to get her down. It was lovely picking and shelling peas from the garden and eating rasberries from the cane. I think grandpy found a gold coin in that large field to the west.
Uncle Ron's (husband to my late aunt Doreen) brother (Frank Discombe) had a workshop to the north of the property. There appears to be similar activity still going on there today.
I remember playing whist, Newmarket and dominoes with my grandparents.
Who remembers the round tin of buttons? Then there was the wooden stool next to the cream coloured Aga in the kitchen where the radio would play "Mrs Dale's Diary" and "The Archers" (Jack Woolley had all his marbles then and Walter Gabriel was still walking the fields).

RIGHT UP SALLY'S ABBEY

Better late than never - back in May 2009 Sally had the priviledge of participating in a flower festival in Westminster Abbey - she finished creating this design at 2.30am - very spooky in the Abbey at night!

The arrangement was destined for the commemorative window for Stephenson. Hence the display is influenced by the engineer's Menai bridge.

WANTED: UK STORAGE SPACE

Since leaving UK in September 2007 my household effects have been stored in a garage in Eastbourne. The owner now wants to sell the garage and I need to vacate.

I have two choices:
Ship to Philippines or
Find new storage space.

There is stuff that I definitely want here (family silver, heirlooms, photographs, CD collection, books etc), but there is much that I can now do without. So, before I ship I need to weed. In the meantime, I must find approximately 10 cu metres of new storage space. It should be secure and dry. I am prepared to pay. Can anyone help?

JOYCE HOUGHTON: FALL

My thanks to cousin Tracey for advising me about Mum's fall in a message to me on Facebook on Monday. I found the following in an email from my sister on Wednesday morning:

"
You can always email me if you wish to know about Mum.

The day after you telephoned the home* she unfortunately took a tumble backwards down the stairs.  She was taken by ambulance to the RD&E where they discovered she had broken her shoulder.  There is little they can do other than strap it up and wait for it to heal.  She has been in some pain which is being controlled by painkillers.  On Thursday afternoon she will be attending the fracture clinic when they will reassess her progress.

She seems fairly settled the last few weeks I have visited.   I continue to try and see her every week.  I am getting to know the staff and other residents now and it is much easier to go
.
"

* In the absence of any recent news about Mum I telephoned the residential home on Sunday. Nurse Daniel was most helpful and gave me a full run-down. His description matched my own experience when I last saw Mum nearly a year ago. I took heart in this because whilst we can expect no improvement in her condition, there appeared to be no further deterioration.

How to Dance in the Rain

I thought I would share this little heart-warming story with you all:

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80's arrived to  have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an  appointment at 9:00.

I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an
hour before someone would be able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and  decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would check his wound. On  exam, it was well healed, so I talked  to one of the doctors, got the needed  supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.

While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's appointment  this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no, that he needed to  go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her  health. He told me that she had been  there for a while and that she was a victim  of Alzheimer's Disease.

As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late. He replied that  she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognised him in five years now.
I was surprised, and  asked him,
'And you still go every morning, even though she  doesn't know who you are?'

He smiled as he patted my hand and said,
'She doesn't  know me, but I still know  who she is.'

I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought,
'That is the kind of love I want in my life.' True love is neither physical, nor    romantic. True love is an acceptance of  all  that is, has been, will be, and will    not be. The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just  make  the best of everything they have.

Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but 'how to dance in the rain'.

VISIT TO JOYCE HOUGHTON

Pictured: Joyce, Wendy and Tracey

Joyce's brother John Mildon, wife Marina and daughters Wendy and Tracey visited her recently at Hay House. The day was bitter-sweet, for this meeting was followed by attendance at the funeral of  Doreen Discombe (Joyce and John's elder sister).

Monday's Child is Fair of Face

Nathan is a popular Christian name for a boy. It has been a popular name since the birth of Christianity. It is a Hebrew word and its literal translation is "God Has Given". It can also mean "A Gift". Nathan was also the name of a Prophet in the times of David and Solomon. Nathan the Prophet was present during the reign of both Solomon and David, and therefore wrote histories about their reign. The feast day for this prophet is celebrated on 24th October. Eight other men of the same name have been in the Hebrew bible too. Nathan is also a word in the Tamil language. Its literal translation is "Son Of God". This word has been derived from the Sanskrit word "Naath/Naatha). It is also used as a name for a boy among the Tamilians
