is located within Mid Devon local authority area. Historically it formed part of West Budleigh Hundred. It falls within Cadbury Deanery for ecclesiastical purposes. The Deaneries are used to arrange the typescript Church Notes of B.F.Cresswell which are held in the Westcountry Studies Library. The population was 884 in 1801 678 in 1901 . Figures for other years are available on the local studies website. In 1641/2 200 adult males signed the Protestation returns.
Upcott Barton
The barton was the scene of a murder: judge Nicholas Radford, its owner, was killed by Thomas, Earl of Devon, on 23 October 1455. This event was one of the harbingers of the Wars of the Roses. Earlier, during Viking raids, the Exeter mint was removed to a castle hereabouts: its site lies in nearby fields
